How I Overcome Challenges In My Life
Challenges are a natural part of life. They test our strength, patience, and ability to grow. Although difficult moments can make us feel discouraged, I believe that every challenge teaches us a valuable lesson. Throughout my life, I have learned several ways to face obstacles with courage and determination. Life is a journey filled with both joyful moments and difficult situations. No matter how much we try to avoid them, challenges always find their way into our lives. They can appear in many forms, such as academic pressure, personal problems, financial struggles, and health issues.
One of the biggest challenges in my life was what I faced during the past few months. After my A/L exam, I got 3 C passes and my district rank was 96. Because of that, I was selected to the University college of Anuradhapura. I was very happy because I liked the bio-system field.
But after about one month at the campus, I started to feel very unhappy. Something happened that completely changed my feelings. From the first day, our seniors started ragging us. It was more like mental torture than just ragging. I had to listen to scolding and bad words for things I never did. As a girl, I had never heard such bad and dirty words in my life. What hurt me most was that it was the senior girls who treated us that way. I never thought a girl would talk to another girl like that and we had to be completely the way they wanted.
I felt that it was very hard to live like this. I have two elder brothers, and they have never spoken to me in a harsh way. But at the campus, I had to deal with very rude and unkind people. Seeing their faces made me upset. I couldn’t eat properly, sleep properly, or study. I was scared that I might get depression. For many days, I could not sleep at night. Going to lectures felt like the worst thing in my life.
Those seniors didn’t care about our feelings. After some time, I had to decide whether I should continue this course or leave it. This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. I realized that I couldn’t continue something that made me unhappy. I started thinking What other fields can I do? What should I do now? How can I explain this to my parents? They sent me there with so much hope. Whenever I talked to them, I cried. They told me, “Just come home.”
But I worried more about what neighbors and relatives would say. I’m surprised I didn’t lose my mind during those days.
Finally, I made my decision. I understood that this course was not for me. If I stayed, I would only waste my time. Before I dropped out, I applied for other options. I took advice from people I trusted. I thought carefully about what I really liked and what I really wanted to learn. In the end, I understood what my true interest was.
My family gave me the biggest support during this challenge. I learned many things about society, about people, about true friends, and about who really cares for us. I learned how to protect my peace.
I am proud of how I faced this challenge. And today, I am happy with the decision I made.
